Become a Rice Hospice Volunteer
Rice Hospice volunteers are loving, caring and integral members of the hospice team. More than 250 strong, they provide emotional support, comfort and assistance to the hospice patient and family members. Rice Hospice volunteers receive comprehensive training to provide a variety of services focused on companionship and support for the patient as well as respite care for the caregiver. Hospice volunteers visit with patients and family members at home, in the hospital, in an assisted living facility, or in the nursing home, to discover ways in which he or she can help make things a little easier for everyone.
Rice Hospice volunteers and their pets who have graduated from Canine University also make Canine Care for the Journey visits to hospice patients and their families. Rice volunteers do not expect to receive rewards, however, the first thing most volunteers say about the volunteer experience is that they receive far more than they could ever give.
“Volunteers experience what is known as a ‘helper’s high’ says Deb Van Buren, Rice Hospice Volunteer Coordinator. Researchers have found there’s an actual physical sensation that can be brought on by helping others. I would encourage everyone who’s thinking about becoming a volunteer to jump in – volunteering is good for you!”
